Discussion – The Great Awakening
The Great Awakening was first existing in the 1730s and 1740s as a religious revival. It was a protestant revival formed as a protestant revival that people could go to heaven if they worked hard enough and not only if they were predestined to do so. As a result, preachers said that everyone was equal to Christ, and the denominations followed the laity’s role. To date, many Historians believe that this had a lasting impact on Christian denominations and American culture (“History is alive”, 2022).
The Great Awakening challenged the authority of the established churches since the American churches were unhappy with the social and economic developments. The colonists believed that religions allowed rationalization in the spiritual world, and they also felt withdrawn from the traditions that ensconced them in power (Schultz, 2018). As a result, the ministers established the Great Awakening. Our assignment writing services will allow you to attend to more important tasks as our experts handle your task.
The Great Awakening was seen as a preparation for the revolution by many, and the revivalists were preparing Americans to finally take political matters into their own hands. After the First Great Awakening, the pre-ordained order of society completely turned upside down, and it was during this time that the colonists began to see the potential they had to start interpreting the will of God for themselves (“Journal of the American Revolution: History, culture, politics, war.”, 2022). They believed that God was communicating to them in special ways, and it helped them spread communication as well. Hence, the First Great Awakening planted seeds by acting and preparing people for the revolution.
Lastly, the challenging of religious authority led to the challenging of political authority since the Second Great Awakening disagreed that there was only one way to be saved. This implied that everyone had the same opportunity to be saved, and none was greater than the other in God’s eyes. Therefore, questioned why they should listen to the political authority, which then caused objection to political authority.
In conclusion, The Great Awakening was a great help during the American Revolution by helping the colonialists believe in themselves and make change.
