Discussion Response-Week 5

Discussion Response-Week 5

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your post. As hyperthyroidism affects the body’s metabolism, this can pose major challenges for the patient. The fatigue, muscle weakness, and hunger that Mrs Anderson may be experiencing because of hyperthyroidism can make it hard for her to stick to a healthy, strict diet and also get a sufficient amount and frequency of exercise. It was, therefore, important that the patient was checked for Hashimoto and Graves’ disease in the shortest time possible as it may impact the control of glucose levels.

Although type 2 diabetes is not considered an autoimmune disease, there are incidences of hyperthyroid disease occurrence among diabetics (Sotak et al., 2018). Hyperthyroidism is associated with increased requirements for insulin and worse control of blood glucose. The increased levels of thyroid hormone cause an increase in liver glucose production, faster glucose absorption in the intestines, and an increase in insulin resistance.

A patient such as Mrs. Anderson has an increased risk of heart disease because of diabetes. Some people with diabetes have heart failure or coronary heart disease (Severino et al., 2018). Hyperthyroidism increases the heart rate and, consequently, an increase in abnormal heart rhythm. This increase in heart rate can cause angina, worsen heart failure, or interfere with heart failure treatment, as well as increase the possibility of other heart problems developing in the patient. Mrs. Anderson should be assessed for any heart disease as well.
