Discussion Response – System-Based Health Disparities

Discussion Response – System-Based Health Disparities

Health disparities and health inequalities have continued to affect the public in terms of accessing health care services. People’s socioeconomic status and ethnic and racial factors have remained some of the major contributors to health inequalities. These inequalities have created differences in healthcare, thereby resulting in health disparities. A system-based perspective is therefore required to resolve these issues of health inequality and health disparities (Reibling et al., 2019, pp. 611-620). System-based perspective refers to healthcare approaches that use the approved strategies to promote the understanding of factors that affect health outcomes and then model the relationships between those factors to reduce health inequality and health disparity (Burger et al., 2017).

Health disparity and inequality have remained dominant issues when providing health care to Cancer patients in Colorado. The low-income rural residents of Colorado have increasingly complained about receiving poor-quality cancer management services compared to their high-income counterparts from urban areas of Colorado, who receive high-quality cancer therapy services. The local healthcare authorities have established health promotion interventions to promote patient dignity, enhance provider-patient communication, provide equal healthcare access to all, and eliminate ethnic and racial differences in the healthcare context. In a situation like this, the nursing team should deliver equitable healthcare to all patients irrespective of socioeconomic life, ethnicity, or race to enhance healthcare outcomes toward effective management of cancer infection in the area (Burger et al., 2017). The nurses should also provide intensive care to patients to facilitate quick recovery.

My geographic area comprises native Whites, African Americans, and other minority groups. The dominant health inequity in my area is unequal access to healthcare due to racial and ethnic differences and differences in income. This healthcare inequity could most benefit from the system-based approach by promoting equal delivery of healthcare services to all patients, regardless of their racial, ethnic or income differences. This healthcare inequity could also benefit from the system-based approach.

Response to Peer Discussion 1 (Rachel)

I agree with my colleague that public nurses must use a systems-based approach to work with their communities to promote health and prevent disease and disability. I also support that nurses need to advocate for equal healthcare access to alleviate socioeconomic and geographic barriers. Typically, unity guarantees success, and joint functioning between the nurses and community is a sure way of eliminating healthcare inequalities/disparities. However, I’m afraid I have to disagree with Rachel that increasing access to healthcare and social services is enough to address healthcare inequalities/disparities. Much effort must be directed toward the root causes to address these issues, and tackling the matter above will not solve the problem effectively.

Response to Peer Discussion 2 (Angelica)

Changing a group’s health disparity/inequalities requires a systematic approach, similar to individualized care, which requires an interdisciplinary approach. This statement is valid, and I back it up. I agree with Angelica that the healthcare team needs to stress the importance of preventative care, such as early screening, to promote the public’s health status. Practically, embracing preventive care is an essential health promotion intervention that the nurses must focus on to improve the public’s well-being. Contrary, I can’t entirely agree with the colleague that the nurses must coordinate with the individuals to make their medication available according to their preferred pharmacy. A nurse aims to provide the best care services according to evidence-based practices and not according to patients’ preferences.

Question

Post a response to the discussion board. In your post, address the following prompts:

Define a systems-based perspective in relationship to health inequalities/disparities.

Describe the potential nursing role in addressing health inequalities/disparities at the system level.

System-Based Health Disparities

System-Based Health Disparities

Provide an example from your geographic area about which inequities could most benefit from a systems-based approach.

In your response, identify one aspect of your peers’ explanation of the nurse’s role in addressing health inequalities/disparities at the system level with which you agree and one aspect with which you have a different opinion. Share the aspect with which you agree with your peer and explain why. Then, share the different opinions you have and explain the reason behind your different opinions, using an example.

Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support opinions.
