Discussion – Reinvention Scenario
Subject: Initial Thoughts on Stevens District Hospital
Dear Former Coworker,
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to share my initial thoughts about Stevens District Hospital, where I am currently involved in a reinvention process.
Market Served:
Stevens is an acute care, 162-bed hospital located in Jefferson City, serving a regional market of 80,000. The hospital offers many services, from medical and surgical care to rehabilitation and emergency care. Demographic data indicate the aging of the population. The percentage of residents over 65 will increase from 4 percent to 20 percent in the next five years.
Financial Difficulties:
Some disturbing trends were noticed upon reviewing the financial data. While our market share fell from 48% to 35% over the past five years, our primary competitor’s rose from 30% to 43%. In addition, the operating revenues decreased by a slight percentage from last year to this year. However, operating expenses increased. This reduced the income from operations drastically from $22.5 million to $16 million.
Key Takeaways:
- The aging population brings both opportunities and challenges to health care with respect to chronic diseases.
- One of the most important things is to improve market share and patient satisfaction scores.
- The hospital is having trouble hiring doctors, particularly in some of the more critical fields, such as family practice.
- Changes in the payer mix, with projected increases in Medicare patients, will impact financial planning.
Transfer Potential:
While Stevens is a company facing many challenges, I believe it could be an inspiring place to work. It has some strategic initiatives currently in progress, especially in terms of expanding the physician practice system of the hospital. This shows some initiative for growth and change in light of a changing healthcare environment. On the bright side, a new automotive plant coming into the area could diversify the payer mix with commercially insured patients (Felland et al., 2016; McClellan et al., 2021). On the downside, declining market share and financial stress are of concern and cannot be ignored. These types of challenges could create opportunities for creative problem-solving, strategic planning, and professional satisfaction. Not-for-profit status and mission-driven focus also resonate well with my personal values regarding healthcare. Still, though there are risks, the prospect of potentially making a meaningful impact and professional growth that Stevens presents is intriguing.
I would be happy to discuss this further. Let me know your thoughts!
Best regards,
Joletta Turner
