Discussion – Philosophy of Nursing

Discussion – Philosophy of Nursing

Nursing is a caring profession. Within the course of nursing training and career, nurses adopt the knowledge set and skills required to provide the best nursing care and improve the outcomes of their patients. Integral to nursing excellence is learning and understanding the existing work environment and other factors interplaying in healthcare operationalization.

Beliefs

As an aspiring nurse, my belief about people is that everyone preserves human dignity and requires them to be treated respectfully. Stemming from the humanistic caring concepts, a humanistic nurse will try to nurture a healing environment and comfort for their patients.1 My belief about the environment is that it is dynamic and complex. The dynamicity of the modern healthcare landscape implores nurses to be innovative in their care approaches. It welcomes flexibility in nursing skills and requires nurses to continuously update their knowledge base to address the presenting complexities adequately.2 My belief about health is that it is precious and delicate. The fragility of life, in its entirety, puts more value on it and requires that everyone maintains accountability in life preservation. My belief about nursing is that it is a call towards caring. I believe that to be excellent in my caring roles, I must have a high regard for the human aspects of my patients. By treating them respectfully and with dignity, I will be able to promote their healing.

Values

Positive value systems are also important in the resolve to elevate the nursing profession and the corresponding nursing roles in human caring. My value about people is compassion. I am compassionate about helping people improve. My value about the environment is sustainability. I believe that by creating a sustainable environment, populations can thrive. This may encompass educating them on aspects of self-care and self-management, healthcare-seeking behavior, and positive behaviors that foster health. Donessouné et al. report that the key to health sustainability is to empower communities to play the biggest role in taking care of themselves.3 My value about health is accountability. Accountability to health remains important to all. It entails everything that contributes to health and wellness. These include healthcare seeking, consumption of community resources on health, and adoption of healthy behavioral recommendations. As a nurse, I must impart these values to my clients. My values about nursing include human dignity, justice, and professional competency. My value systems, as a nurse, drive me towards respecting and treating my patients equally and fairly, having the right knowledge set and skills to provide the best care to my patients, and acting in their best interests.

Assumptions

My assumption about people is that they may be difficult to deal with sometimes. Complexities within the clinical setup sometimes put nurses’ ability to handle diverse groups to task. My assumption about the environment is that it is not rewarding to some people. The healthcare landscape maintains complexity. Even with its significance in community health, it is sometimes neglected by authorities. Cases of nurses’ strikes sometimes put into question the willingness of governments to improve the welfare of frontline workers. My assumption about health is that it is divine and needs to be preserved at all costs. My nursing assumption is that it is more than just talking to the patients. Effective nursing also requires nurses to engage in positive activities such as advocacy.

Conclusion

My beliefs, values, and assumptions on nursing and the philosophies I live by encompass recognizing the human aspects of my patients, understanding my environments and how several factors interplay in healthcare, and maintaining accountability towards effective nursing. These viewpoints continue to inform and shape my nursing practice. They push me to be a better nurse by ensuring that I acquire the required skills and knowledge. They have also contributed to my decision to pursue advanced practice nursing. I believe that APN will unlock more opportunities for me to provide the best care to my patients.
