Discussion – Pay Discrimination
Comparable Worth
Comparable worth is defined as the equal pay for dissimilar occupati0ns that offer the organization equal benefits. Comparable worth is also known as pay equity. The existence of comparable worth came about due to the consistent discrimination against careers that are occupied by women (BELL, n.d.). Such discrimination led to lower wages for the women than the men who performed roles that granted organizations similar worth (O’Neill, 2002).
Why do you think different careers pay more than others, and what does that have to do with comparable worth? Is there a difference in pay between male and female type careers?
Earning gaps occur for assorted reasons. Differences in qualifications, occupation variations, different work behaviors, firm disparities, union variations, labor market changes, and discrimination. The occupation differences manifest as required knowledge and skills, working environment, required efforts, and responsibilities of each position. Educational differences determine the qualifications of everyone. The firm characteristics include pay strategy, size, and technology. The demand and supply in the market affect the pay levels. The comparable worth manifests in the earning gaps by eliminating the activation of discrimination as a pay determinant. Careers cannot be categorized as male or female because all genders are pursuing any career they wish. However, if the firm’s practices tend to push omens toward low-paying jobs, this can be termed as discrimination (Milkovich, Newman, & Gerhart, 2013). Usually, job evaluations do not consider gender as an important aspect of the performance of a certain job description.
How is (or was) the value of an occupation determined in society and what is the impact on equal pay today?
The determination of an occupation’s value undergoes four steps. The use of a point job evaluation that is neutral in terms of gender. All jobs that have a similar score should be remunerated equally. Consideration of the females and males in various job groups. The wages for male-dominated jobs should be used for point evaluation. These steps have improved the comparable worth of jobs and reduced the wage gaps that resulted from past discrimination (Milkovich, Newman, & Gerhart, 2013).
