The onboarding period is critical for new employees because it determines their engagement. It allows the employer or organization to make a first impression on the employees. The onboarding experience offers an opportunity to create a positive emotional attachment to the new employees (Maurer, 2021). A company that conducts productive new hires benefits in different ways. Firstly, at least 69 per cent of new employees have had positive experiences during onboarding and have stayed for at least three years. Thus, a company’s employee turnover is low as retention is high. A structured onboarding program leads to a 58 per cent retention rate among employees. The likelihood of retaining clients for long periods reduces the cost of recruitment for these entities. In addition, the productivity of organizations increases by at least 50 per cent among new hires (Hirsch, 2017). The employees also benefit from a positive onboarding experience because they fit into the organizational culture and learn the governing norms and values. The positive impression allows the employees to identify growth opportunities within the new environment.

While joining my current job as a new hire, I feel welcomed most of the time through orientation programs that introduce the employees to the organization. The friendliness that other employees and senior managers exhibit creates confidence among the new hires about their decision to join these entities. It also promotes interaction among the new and current employees, which facilitates the process of fitting into the company’s culture (SHRM, 2021). Departmental sessions with the managers also enabled the new hires to familiarize themselves with the other employees with whom they are expected to work. My current organization is keen on maximizing the newcomer spirit through orientations and regular consultations with new employees.
