Discussion – Nervous Disorders
Nervous disorders are disorders that attack the nervous system. It is important to note that the nervous system is a delicate human network that begins from the brain and spinal cord. It is from these regions where hundreds of nerves branch out to all body parts. Also, it is essential to note that this system is responsible for all voluntary and involuntary activities like breathing, moving, and processing information (Gilmour et al., 2020). Therefore, when a nervous disorder occurs, it affects the nerves and thus affects the person’s ability to undertake these voluntary and involuntary tasks. Moreover, there are several types of nervous disorders depending on the regions that genetic issues, illnesses, or injuries can cause the disorder attacks and the disorder. Epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Cerebral palsy, and Parkinson’s disease are examples of nervous disorders (Gilmour et al., 2020). Also, nervous disorders include multiple sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, and motor neuron disease. Each of these disorders have different symptoms and manifest themselves differently.
Even though the nervous disorders are different and each manifests differently, there are some common symptoms that one can use to detect if they have one or more of these nervous disorders. Numbness, tingling, pain, or burning on one’s limbs and extremities indicate a nervous disorder. One can also have unexplained weakness, paralysis, or loss of muscle strength if they have one or more of the mentioned nervous disorders (Alessandrini et al., 2019). Other symptoms include persistent headache that is sudden or different, body coordination issues, shooting pain that goes down the leg, and back pains that extend to other body parts. Vision problems, slur speech, and memory loss also are symptoms of nervous disorder.
There are many different causes of nervous disorders. However, the most common ones are genetic disorders, nervous system infections, congenital abnormalities or orders, and environmental problems, including malnutrition. Injuries to the brain and spinal cord also cause nervous disorders.
It is important to note that there are no cures for most nervous disorders, but there are rehabilitations that can be done to cure the symptoms and help a person live a normal life. Thus, most treatments handled by neuro-science medicine focus on treating the nervous system symptoms related to a given nervous disorder. The first common treatment is interventional neuroradiology (Gilmour et al., 2020). This treatment involves the insertion of small flexible catheter tubes into the blood vessels connected to the brain. This approach allows the physician to treat nervous system disorders like stroke. There are also interventional treatments like the use of balloon angioplasty and stenting of vertebral artery. The doctor can also use the intra-arterial therapy used to treat stroke. Balloon angioplasty and stenting of the vertebral artery is another intervention.
In some cases, the Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty treatments can be used especially for disorders that affect vertebral fractures (Alessandrini et al., 2019). Another treatment approach could be the traditional neurosurgery used to treat problems in the brain and the other structures in the surrounding areas of the brain. This kind of surgery requires the surgeon to open the skull. There is also microsurgery, where the surgeon treats small structures in the brain using a microscope and other tiny instruments. There are also treatments using drugs, for instance, the use of drug pumps, drugs for deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and rehabilitation drugs for people with brain injury or stroke.
Nervous disorders may be age-related even though, in some cases, the disorder may be caused by injuries and other infections that can happen to anyone at any time. For starters, there are age-related nervous disorders like Alzheimer’s disease (Gilmour et al., 2020). It is important to remember that as people age, the nervous system also ages, which can lead to these age-related nervous disorders. However, those disorders caused by injuries can happen to people at any age. The same will apply to genetically caused nervous disorders like epilepsy.
