Discussion – Mixed Method Research

Discussion – Mixed Method Research

Types of Mixed Method (MM) Research

The four major mixed-method research designs are sequential explanatory, sequential exploratory, embedded, and convergent parallel. Sequential explanation collects and analyzes qualitative data first, then quantitative data to prove and justify the qualitative findings. The sequential exploratory approach first collects and analyzes quantitative data, followed by qualitative data to explain the quantitative findings. Additionally, the embedded research collects both data concurrently by one type of data primary and the other secondary, while the convergent parallel design involves collecting both quantitative and qualitative data sets are collected concurrently but analyzed separately to compare outcomes and draw conclusions.

Paradigms in MM Research

Paradigms in MM research shape assumptions and perspectives and influence the way researchers design studies, collect data and interpret findings (Simonovich, 2017). From a personal perspective, paradigms help researchers design MM research in a way that the quantitative and qualitative research methods are compatible and research results are credible.

How does the Conduction of the Literature Review differ between Qualitative, Quantitative, and MM?

In qualitative research, the literature focuses on exploring themes, phenomena, and theory to conceptually understand the phenomena, while in quantitative research, the literature review focuses on the statistical data from previous quantitative studies to best define variables studies (McCusker & Gunaydin, 2015). In MM research, the literature review combines qualitative and quantitative studies (Bressan et al., 2017).

The Current Outlook for Funding MM Research in Nursing

MM research findings have proved their potential in developing new perspectives on intervention not previously proven to work but applicable in practice (Bressan et al., 2017). This has improved funding opportunities for MM research, and the future of MM research funding seems positive.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Various Mediums for Disseminating Data

Poster presentations provide better visually attractive and easy-to-understand data presentation making it easier to understand the information; however, only less data can be presented in a single poster. Subsequently, podium presentations provide better and more detailed presentations with a live interactive audience but may be limited time and space availability. Manuscripts present more detailed and peer-reviewed data and information to a wide audience; however, publishing may take time, and access may be limited in certain regions.

Each medium serves different purposes, and researchers often use a combination of these methods to disseminate data effectively. The choice depends on the nature of the research, the target audience, and the level of detail needed to communicate the findings.
