Discussion – How to Care Using Technology
In the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the integration of technology and electronic documentation has undeniably transformed how nursing care is delivered. While it may seem that we are moving away from hands-on care, incorporating nursing informatics standards offers a unique opportunity for nurses to personalize patient care in innovative ways.
One way to apply nursing informatics standards to personalize care is by utilizing electronic health records (EHRs). By leveraging EHRs, nurses can access comprehensive patient data, allowing for a more holistic understanding of the individual’s health status (Ayamolowo et al., 2023; Vos et al., 2020). This enables the development of personalized care plans that consider the patient’s medical history, preferences, and values. For example, in an acuity-adaptable unit, where patients may transition between medical surgery and progressive care, technology has facilitated seamless communication of patient acuity levels, ensuring that care plans are tailored to each patient’s needs at any given moment.
Another example is the use of wearable health monitoring devices. These devices can track vital signs, activity levels, and even sleep patterns, providing real-time data that can inform personalized interventions (Canali et al., 2022). For instance, patients with chronic conditions benefit from continuous monitoring to detect early signs of deterioration, allowing nurses to intervene proactively. This level of personalization not only enhances patient outcomes but also empowers individuals to participate actively in their care.
Moreover, telehealth and virtual care platforms have become increasingly prevalent, enabling nurses to maintain personalized connections with patients beyond the traditional healthcare setting (Haleem et al., 2021). Regular virtual check-ins can provide a platform for patients to discuss concerns, ask questions, and receive education tailored to their specific needs. This fosters a sense of individualized care and promotes patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans.
In conclusion, as nurses, embracing technology and nursing informatics standards can enhance our ability to provide personalized care. Whether through EHRs, wearable devices, or virtual care platforms, leveraging technology allows us to tailor interventions to each patient’s unique needs and preferences in an acuity-adaptive unit, ultimately promoting improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Question
Step 1 Post your response to the discussion board.
With the introduction of huge amounts of technology and electronic documentation, it seems that we are moving further from providing hands-on nursing care to patients. How can we, as nurses, apply nursing informatics standards to personalize care for patients? Give some examples of how you have seen technology used to personalize care.
Step 2 Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them by Friday at 11:59 pm Mountain Time.
Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to support or debate other students’ posts. Consider the methods of applying informatics to patient care that were discussed by other students. Share whether you agree or disagree with the methods they chose and explain why. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support your opinions.
