Discussion: Future Goals and Vision as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Hello, my name is Mamada Abdi, and I’m excited to share my vision for my future role as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. My career objectives involve becoming an expert and caring provider serving patients with evidence-based psychological care that considers their individual needs. I will combine psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to tackle complicated conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and co-occurring substance use disorders. Along with clinical practice, I seek positions in research, precepting students, and advocating for mental health.

To fulfill these objectives, I will engage in lifelong learning by taking continuing education programs, attending professional conferences, and keeping up with the literature, like Essential Psychopharmacology by Stahl (2021). I will find mentoring in experienced providers, engage in case consultations, and develop my abilities in interdisciplinary practice. The strategies will keep me updated on the new treatments and keep me on top of my practice, which will be at the highest level.

I am particularly passionate about serving underserved populations, including rural communities, minority groups, and individuals facing socioeconomic barriers to care. These groups are frequently burdened with disparities, stigma, and less access to mental health care. I can address these gaps through cultural competence, the integration of language interpretation services, and liaising with community-based resources. Besides, Mongelli et al. (2020) note that culturally-designed interventions enhance both treatment engagement and outcomes.

Although I am confident about the treatment of most of the psychiatric disorders, I am cautious when treating treatment-resistant psychosis and extreme personality disorders. These situations need a thorough medication management process, a command of intricate neurobiological processes, and close safety monitoring, as noted by Maj et al. (2021). To overcome this challenge, I will complete practice training, work with multidisciplinary teams, and use evidence-based algorithms. These measures will guide safe and effective care and enhance my skills.

In summary, my vision is to provide high-quality, patient-centered, and culturally appropriate care to various populations. With continuing education, teamwork, and devotion to evidence-based practice, I believe that I will make constructive contributions within the mental health profession.
