For example, a patient with anxiety who engages in avoidance may be guided to practice journaling and deep breathing as healthier coping mechanisms. Such interventions promote active recovery participation and align with recovery-oriented care (Colizzi et al., 2020). A second competency is promoting social inclusion and reducing stigma. Nurses can develop supportive group interventions to help patients—such as those with schizophrenia—enhance social skills and build confidence in interpersonal interactions. Among additional competencies, cultural sensitivity is vital. Culturally competent care ensures patients’ beliefs and values are respected. Ethics is another foundational competency that emphasizes advocacy, confidentiality, and the protection of patient autonomy. An application of this standard can be exemplified when a patient with schizophrenia declines medication. Rather than enforcing treatment, the nurse initiates a collaborative team meeting to explore less restrictive alternatives while honoring the patient’s rights. This approach upholds the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and nonmaleficence, ensuring care is both safe and respectful (Beck & Ballon, 2020).

In summary, PMH nurses rely on ethical decision-making, cultural competence, and strength-based interventions to guide safe, effective care. As PMHNPs engage in psychotherapy and advanced roles, adherence to these standards fosters meaningful outcomes and legal and ethical practice.
