Discussion – Equity vs Equality

In the social welfare framework, inequality describes the unequal distribution of opportunities, resources, and rights among varying groups, usually resulting in disparities in education, healthcare, and income, just to name a few. Equality, on the other hand, aims to solve inequality by providing equal resources, education, or opportunities to everyone, but it disregards the fact that everyone has different individual circumstances (Milken Institute School of Public Health, 2020). As such, this concept does little to address underlying inequalities. Equity, however, is a concept that goes the extra step and takes into account individual circumstances and unique needs and, as such, recommends that the resources be allocated in a way that levels the playing field. Through equity, resources are tailored in a way that addresses their unique needs so that everyone has what they need in order to achieve similar results. The concept of justice in the social welfare framework incorporates equality and equity in addition to the broader objective of disassembling existing systemic barriers that have led to inequality (Milken Institute School of Public Health, 2020). Justice centers on creating a nondiscriminatory and just society where social, economic, and political structures are rearranged to provide permanent resolutions to the disparity.
