Discussion – Content Area Reading
Teaching reading in the content area is an instrumental tool that promotes effective learning across all grade levels. Initially, I thought teaching content was the most fundamental element in promoting learning. However, I now understand that teachers have a critical role in teaching content area reading to improve the learning process. Despite content area reading being meant for higher grade levels, educators should introduce the tool early since the children incorporate the skills throughout their academic journey (Richardson et al., 2012). Hence, teaching reading in the content area helps students to integrate the skills at their higher levels. Content area reading also helps students understand the content for effective learning. In addition, content area reading promotes student-centred learning, where the students can learn, synthesize, recall, and use the learned information. Educators understand the most effective strategies and practices to implement in the classroom to enhance learning. Students develop skills that improve their comprehension of reading content.
Lack of experience and insufficient preparedness among educators are significant challenges in teaching reading in the content area. Educators may expect their students to be fluent in reading, yet they lack exposure to teaching content area reading. As such, educators need professional training to improve their skills and knowledge on effectively integrating teaching. Also, teachers depend on assumptive teaching, where they expect students to have certain knowledge and be willing to read to learn. Instead, teachers should avoid making assumptions about their students; they should motivate students to read by exposing them to reading materials and guiding their learning process. Students may also be exposed to poor reading habits and culture, which affects the development of their content-area reading skills (Solikhah, 2018). Educators should mentor students to improve their skills.
