Proper and meaningful communication with students and their families is critical for all parties within the classroom. The first thing I would do to prepare for the meeting is to reach out to the parents or family members and ask about their preferences for communication. If they are comfortable communicating in English or if I would need to be prepared to have an interpreter present. Also, getting to know the family and their culture outside of the school setting is important. Visuals are a key resource to have in this meeting. Some school topics may be difficult to explain, so having visuals the families can physically see may help them comprehend better. In this type of meeting, building trust and a foundational relationship is important, so I will always begin these meetings with positive attributes and student strengths.

Providing authentic ways in which parents can assist their child is another critical resource to have, such as going to the zoo if you’re covering animals in science. This will help provide their child with real-world experiences that they share and talk about together in their language. Overall being able to effectively communicate with students and their families who have English as a second language is imperative. So, I will make sure that all the families in my class know that I celebrate and rejoice in having a culturally and linguistically diverse class.
