The hashtag refers to the rise of inequality in the US. It is drawn from Chapter 16, section III of the American Yawp (American Yawp Chapter 16, section 3). Inequality started once big companies marshaled capital at an unprecedented rate, leading to huge profits that had not been attained before (Locke & Wright, 2020). Despite the huge profits, companies hired significant workforce but paid them poorly. This created a new urban and rural poor population of lowly paid factory workers working for capitalist companies. Due to the growing inequality, there was a need to embrace state welfare and charity to help the most vulnerable members of society survive. Understanding the origin of inequality is crucial for various reasons. Firstly, recognizing that inequality is inevitable is key to implementing strategies to ensure social justice (Locke & Wright, 2020). Besides, the government can spur economic growth in economically segregated neighborhoods to create employment opportunities.
