Disability

Disability

My current definition of “disability” is someone unable to complete a specific task due to a mental or psychical setback. My current views about people with disabilities are that they are still people and deserve to be treated with the same respect as people with no disability. I also believe mental disabilities should be just as recognized as psychical disabilities. Overall, how I view people with disabilities is that they are just people who must work a little more complicated than people without such obstacles. My grandpa has diabetes, and my husband’s aunt has osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease.

My grandpa can live independently if he takes his insulin, but my husband’s aunt cannot live alone. She is either in a wheelchair or has a walker. She went from 150 pounds to 78 pounds. She has almost broken every bone; sadly, her disease is incurable. Sadly, her quality of life is deficient. In this course, I hope to learn about the differences and similarities between specific disabilities. I am curious about how people with disabilities view their own life. I believe this course will better my future career since I will have to work with people with disabilities in a mental hospital setting.
