Difference Between the Strategic Management Process and Organization Management

Difference Between the Strategic Management Process and Organization Management

According to Greve (2021), strategic management is the process of planning, evaluating, and implementing an organization’s operations. The evaluation focuses on the internal and external environments. Planning includes creating a corporate direction, designing business models and acquisitions, and creating global and competitive strategies. Implementation includes building the right organizational structure, controlling strategic processes, developing management culture, and guiding the organization through corporate governance. The day-to-day management of an organization includes operations management. Wolniak (2020) defines operations management as the process of sharing resources through an established system in a transformed and combined controlled manner to add value based on organizational policies. The main role of operations managers is to convert inputs into outputs. Strategic management process and the organization’s day-to-day management focus on an organization’s future, such as creating a long-term business plan.

In contrast, day-to-day operations management focuses on short-term ideas and implementation methods. For example, planning to expand into global markets over the next five years falls under strategic management. An example of day-to-day operations management includes dispatching customer orders and hiring employees to fill vacant positions. Strategic management relies on a company’s external affairs, such as its position in its industry, interaction with suppliers, and collaboration with other businesses. Consequently, the day-to-day management of operations includes focusing on internal affairs in a company based on how processes work and the collaboration of departments. For example, day-to-day operations management may include increasing production efficiency by integrating technology into an organization’s operations. Strategic management may include merging and acquiring other businesses or organizations to create a competitive advantage and increase revenue.
