Development in Middle Adulthood

Development in Middle Adulthood

Development in Middle Adulthood

Seth is in stage 7 of Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development. This stage entails Generativity versus Stagnation. Consistently, this stage mainly comprises people aged forty to sixty-five years. Erickson classified this age group as middle adulthood. At this stage, people focus on investing in projects or activities that will produce long-term returns (Samsanovich, 2021).

Furthermore, attention is channeled to activities that promote other people’s growth. Such activities include bringing up children and participating in volunteer and mentorship programs. All of these activities ensure the well-being of future generations and society. Individuals who fail to accomplish these activities consider themselves failures with a diminished impact on the universe.

The goals of this stage are not achieved. Seth got married, but their union was dissolved after eight years. In addition, he did not sire any children during that period. He has failed to set up and maintain a family. Further, Seth became sickly, started missing work, and was later laid off (Ganter & Yeakel, 1980). After that, he suffered a stroke. The illness, subsequent lay-off, and medical bills contributed to his financial predicament. This is an indicator of stagnation. Furthermore, he had not impacted society positively and seemed to be in denial when financial hardships struck.

Seth is struggling to achieve the goals of this stage. After offsetting his medical bill, he lost his financial security. The fact that he opts to apply for the government’s benefits and financial assistance confirms his struggles. He confesses that he cannot believe he would need the government’s help (Ganter & Yeakel, 1980). Seth reports that things have been difficult after losing his job. Furthermore, he admits that a therapist could be an asset in helping him understand the effects of his struggles on his life.
