Developing Professional Identity in Nursing-A Guiding Plan for Students
Janice (2020) defines professional identity as the sense of oneself in relation to other individuals, which is influenced by characteristics, norms, and values of the nursing field, resulting in the individual perceiving and doing actions that are expected of a nursing profession. One of the key attributes that defines professional identity among nurses is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to perceive, manage, and regulate emotions. To become emotionally intelligent, I would have to work on my ability to sense other individuals’ emotions alongside needs through active listening. Besides the other key attribute necessary for nurses’ professional identity is integrity. Qalehsari and Ebadi (2017) affirm that integrity is what ensures nurses do not compromise on the values and ethics that govern the profession. To maintain high levels of integrity, I would commence by being honest to myself and the people around me. By doing so, my beliefs and behaviors shall be aligned, and everyone will be able to see that I am genuine.
Upon completing my BSN program, I anticipate that I will assume accountability for professional and personal behaviors that depict the nursing standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct. Additionally, the other major way my educational journey is expected to shape my personal identity can be seen by integrating evidence, clinical judgment, interdisciplinary perspective, and patient preferences when it comes to planning, implementation, and the evaluation of care outcomes. Ultimately, my educational background is expected to aid me in synthesizing knowledge from liberal education with professional nursing (Qalehsari. & Ebadi, 2017). One goal for continued professional identity as a nurse is engaging in research and policy formulation to explore and address the implications of economic, sociocultural, legal, and political factors that shape the quality of patient care, safety in the workplace, as well as the scope of nursing and other allied healthcare professionals practice.
