Nursing portfolios depict accomplishments, competencies, professional goals, and skills. (2018).   The following discussion captures some strategies for developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.

One of the strategies that ought to be utilized to maintain a professional portfolio involves outlining the training and experience one has gained in the nursing profession. The nursing professional must stay current when documenting new awards and education in the professional portfolio. As such, the portfolio needs to speak for who we are and be able to impress the employers. For a compelling portfolio to be built, existing templates and platforms should be utilized to create the original framework. This framework may organize personal information to build the portfolio’s content. Besides, organizing academic achievements is also integral in ensuring excellence.

Birks et al. (2016) emphasize that nurses should be creative in presenting personal information in writing the structure alongside the presentation of a portfolio. This can be realized by aligning and incorporating whatever the organization seeks in the candidate. By doing so, nurses can demonstrate self-awareness regarding the job they are applying for alongside the organization’s mission and goals. The authors note that this is an effective way of ensuring that the portfolios are not generic but may be individualized for different applications. Besides, Burns (2018) has identified several portfolio elements and emphasized ensuring that only verifiable information should be provided on each aspect. The author suggests that employers typically perform a background check, so it is essential to offer information that makes it easier for them to verify.

The second strategy that ought to be utilized involves online networking. Hannas and Olivo (2017) have noted the significance of online identity alongside professional networking. For example, LinkedIn offers an ideal platform where professionals may develop their profiles and connect with others in an online professional setup. Sidebotham et al. (2018) provide insights in their article concerning employers’ perception of electronic portfolios and conclude that employers had a highly favorable perception of ePortfolios. The authors suggested that employers are likely to have a higher probability of linking up with an applicant who has provided a link to their portfolio.

Conclusively, the path toward professional growth is primarily influenced by how a nurse can make good connections to desired employment. It is critical to establish employment by developing a compelling portfolio that depicts one based on one’s professional achievements. It takes several years to build credibility as professionals, a long process to gain knowledge, and immense efforts to improve skills. As such, everything must be placed on a document conveying information to prospective employers.
