Determining the Appropriate Methodology- Basic vs. Applied Research for My Future Study
My future project is centered on human research, specifically in mental health. The applied method is best suited for the project. The applied method directs the research efforts toward solving a specific problem. The mental health landscape is an evolving field with numerous opportunities for growth and advancement. Notwithstanding, the normative operationalizations sometimes present considerable identifiable problems. These problems mostly border on access and quality improvement placing a significant burden on healthcare professions, systems, and organizations to address them. While basic research provides an opportunity for advancing knowledge rather than addressing the problem, I am passionate about contributing to efforts targeting to address already identified research.
Applied research provides the framework for identifying a knowledge base that is solution-driven. Krystal et al. (2021) note that applied research focuses on discovering new information. Through research and development, I may be able to create newer innovative products that further advance mental healthcare in diverse communities. Applied research is also more practical as they are informed on existing and identifiable real-life problems. Through action research, researchers can leverage the existing resources and knowledge base to address presenting challenges in healthcare. Their specificity also makes them superior in addressing identified problems and challenges in healthcare.
Applied research also provides a pathway toward cost-saving in healthcare research. Acharya & Pathak, (2019) notes that applied research reduces uncertainty in research processes by ensuring that research processes are solution-driven and confounded in already existing knowledge base and identifiable problems. In general, applied research, just like basic research, provides a way to find some information. Both can be used in diverse research studies. However, the applied method seems more appropriate to my future study.

Question
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:
After reading the Week 1 Overview and Ch. 2 of The Action Research Dissertation: A Guide for Students and Faculty from the University Library, think about your future study. What method, basic or applied, seems most appropriate for your project? Explain your position.
Include your own experience as well as 2 citations from PEER-REVIEWED ACADEMIC JOURNALS (I normally use SAGE JOURNALS), industry publications, books, and/or other sources that align with or contradict your comments. Cite your sources according to APA guidelines. If you found information that contradicts your experience, explain why you agree or disagree with the information.
Week 1 Overview:
Welcome to RES/709! This week you will learn about basic and applied research. When you think about research you probably think of basic research or research to expand the existing base of knowledge. Students in traditional PhD programs typically conduct basic research to advance the body of knowledge in their fields and add academic value. Basic research is important to increase understanding of a topic or issue and expand knowledge, but the purpose is not to create something new. There is no clear practical value to the discoveries that emerge from basic research.
Applied research, on the other hand, is intended to address real-world, practical problems. Applied research is used in education, business, and health care to find practical solutions to everyday problems, such as improving academic achievement or curing disease. This type of research is important in solving problems that often impact people’s lives, work, health, and general well-being. Students in practitioner doctoral programs have the option to conduct either basic or applied research.
