What approach would you use in designing a child sexual abuse prevention program? Would you target children in early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescence?

My approach to designing a child sexual abuse prevention program would involve a primary intervention strategy. This strategy, by and large, involves efforts on a massive scale whose main objective is to prevent aim to stop abuse from occurring in the first place by addressing underlying risk factors and promoting protective factors. One of the best prevention programs would involve school-based programs. Implementation of comprehensive prevention programs in schools that incorporate age-appropriate curriculum on personal safety, body autonomy, and healthy relationships. Provide training for educators on recognizing signs of abuse and creating safe and supportive learning environments. Further, as learned earlier, children make up a very significant percentage of child sexual abusers, and this key issue is not as talked about as in regards to grown-up child abusers (Royse & Griffiths, 2019). As such, I would target early childhood for this program so that they will learn to look out for not only adults who try to harm them but also their fellow age mates. Further, these programs would also aim to teach children about boundaries so that they do not unintentionally or, due to lack of awareness of their actions, end up abusing other children.

What ideas do you have about “greater political advocacy and agitation” on behalf of child protection?

In my perspective, greater political advocacy and agitation on behalf of child protection require strategies that effectively raise awareness, mobilize public support, and influence policymakers to prioritize the issue. As such, some of the ideas I have regarding this include launching public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of child protection and the prevalence and impact of child sexual abuse. Notably, with the global spread use of social media, I would use these platforms to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, and promote action. Secondly, I would advocate for legislative reforms aimed at strengthening laws and policies related to child protection, including measures to prevent child sexual abuse, improve reporting and response mechanisms, and hold perpetrators accountable. This is especially necessary in regard to social media platforms and children’s restrictions. This may involve lobbying to enact new laws, amendments to existing legislation, or allocating resources to support child protection efforts. Additionally, I would advocate for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data and research on child sexual abuse and other forms of child maltreatment, for instance, the ISPCAN Working Group on Child Maltreatment Data (ISPCAN-WGCMD) (Fluke et al., 2021). Subsequently, I would use these evidence-based findings to engage with policymakers, government officials, and elected representatives at local, national, and international levels to advocate for child protection priorities. Meet with key stakeholders, participate in public hearings, submit policy briefs, and use platforms such as petitions and letter-writing campaigns to convey concerns and recommendations.
