Description of Technology

Description of Technology

Description of Technology

Part 1

Telehealth is a new educational technology. It refers to the use of technology to deliver remote services: continuous professional education, health information, and healthcare services (Totten et al., 2019). Telehealth utilizes various technologies. These include remote patent monitoring, mobile health, audio, and video (Tong et al., 2020). Store and forwarding and digital photography technologies are also applicable to telehealth (Park et al., 2018). Telehealth allows remote communication, hence continuous professional education and training. This can happen via videoconferencing, smartphone applications, and other telehealth technologies (Tong et al., 2020). An example of telehealth technology that has been fully embraced in education and training is the Safety, Quality, Informatics, and Leadership (SQIL) program designed by Harvard Medical School (Harvard Medical School, n.d.). These technologies are particularly useful for healthcare providers with tight schedules and those who are not physically present at the place of work.

There are four types of telehealth. They include synchronous telehealth, asynchronous telehealth, mobile health, and remote patient monitoring (Carroll, 2018). Synchronous telehealth entails using video conferencing software to facilitate real-time communication between healthcare providers or between healthcare providers and patients (Carroll, 2018). Mobile health involves the use of smartphone applications to access information and communicate. This facilitates communication among healthcare providers and between the healthcare providers and patients. Remote patient monitoring allows the healthcare provider to follow up on a patient’s vitals remotely and facilitate initiating prompt interventions if the vitals deviate from normal (Carroll, 2018). Asynchronous telehealth entails collecting, storing, and transmitting patient health information. It enables the exchange of patient details between healthcare providers in different locations. I will compare the two versions of synchronous telehealth: Doxy. me and Zoom (Remote Work, n.d.).

Comparison of Features, Benefits, and Capabilities

Feature, Capability, and Benefit Version 1 (Name): Zoom Version 2 (Name): Doxy.me
Number of users It is scalable and can accommodate up to 1000 users (Remote Work, n.d.). It can accommodate up to 10 users (Remote Work, n.d.).

Real-time editing and screen sharing Permits real-time editing and screen sharing (Remote Work, n.d.) Doesn’t support real-time editing and screen sharing

Part 2

Assumptions

Comparing the features, benefits, and capabilities of a specific type of health technology has various merits. It identifies the strengths and weaknesses of health technology. This information helps to guide the decision-making process on the most appropriate version that should be adopted. It also helps to determine whether the existing versions fulfill the expected needs. The disadvantage of this type of comparison is the failure to replicate similar findings. Results obtained from the comparison may not be replicated after implementing the health technology. When comparing the costs of the two software, it is assumed that the healthcare organization has limited financial resources and budget allocation toward the acquisition of the software.

Analysis

Zoom would work best in healthcare settings with a huge task force. This is because it allows scalability and can allow up to 1000 users (Remote Work, n.d.). This capacity will ensure that all members of the interdisciplinary task force access the educational and training programs. Furthermore, it is desirable in education programs that advocate for active participation. This is underpinned by the fact that it has features that facilitate audience engagement. These features include collaboration tools, hand-raising features, file sharing, transfer, voting, and real-time chatting (Remote Work, n.d.). Zoom is also applicable in scenarios where additional educational reference materials are needed after the online educational forum. This is demonstrated by its features and capabilities to support recording, storage of documents, and sharing of files.

Doxy. me would work best in healthcare facilities with a small workforce. This is because it is not scalable and can support up to 10 users (Remote Work, n.d.). Furthermore, it would be desirable in settings where attendance management of audience participation is not prioritized. It doesn’t support these features but supports one-to-one messaging (Remote Work, n.d.). Doxy. I is also desirable in a setting where two or more educational and training programs are designed to target different populations. This is accomplished by utilizing the virtual waiting room tool.

Telehealth is the new educational technology adopted by the healthcare facility to facilitate nursing education. The specific type of telehealth to be selected is synchronous telehealth, which involves using video chats (Carroll, 2018). Synchronous telehealth requires the acquisition of appropriate software and hardware. After that, the nursing workforce should acquire the necessary training to enable them to use synchronous telehealth effectively. Nurse educators should facilitate the training. This will be in collaboration with quality assurance engineers.

The specific software to be used is Zoom. The basis for this choice is demonstrated by its capacity to host a large number of participants and allow email and telephone integration (Remote Work, n.d.). Furthermore, Zoom allows active participation in educational programs, sharing files, and recording. Zoom allows attendance management. Nurse educators can use this to monitor and identify nurses who have completed their training sessions. Besides, zoom supports calendar management and event scheduling (Remote Work, n.d.). This will ensure that nurse educators collaborate with other stakeholders in planning educational programs and increasing their productivity. Successful implementation of telehealth will ensure that the objectives of training and educational programs are accomplished on time. Accordingly, staff will acquire relevant knowledge and skills and increase their competency in executing their tasks.
