Depression is a mood disorder that causes severe symptoms that affect how one feels, thinks, and handles daily activities such as working, eating, and sleeping (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022). Research indicates that the prevalence of depression is higher among women, possibly because of social, hormonal, and biological factors unique to women. Therefore, discussing the primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive actions to reduce the impact of depression in women is of great significance since they will know how to take care of themselves to reduce its imminence.

Primary actions mainly help boost mood in women, thus preventing depression. These include exercising regularly, getting enough sleep (about eight hours a night), practicing relaxation techniques, sharing feelings with trusted people, and participating in social functions and activities (Gregory, 2022).

Further, I would employ secondary actions like joining self-help groups where issues are discussed and shared, visiting my family doctor to discuss challenging problems, and engaging in social activities that I love doing. Also, I will exercise, eat healthily, and speak with my spiritual leader in my church community. When I experience suicidal thoughts, I will call the person I trust, like my social worker. I will interact socially with positive people instead of spending more time on social media. Gregory (2022) argues that if one is unsure who to call, it is better to contact a social agency, a family doctor, a mental health specialist, or health maintenance organizations.

Tertiary actions to treat depression include seeking treatment and medication from a therapist or any trusted mental health specialist. According to their diagnosis, I may consider cognitive behavioral therapy. Simonds (2001) wrote that depressed women mostly assume excessive responsibility for adverse life events, overestimate relationship roles, and underestimate their ability to influence significant outcomes. Cognitive-behavioral therapy includes feminist approaches like assertiveness training, power analysis, and sex-role analysis. I could also consider taking medication based on the tests and symptoms as analyzed by my mental health expert.

In conclusion, research shows that women are more vulnerable to depression than men due to the social, psychological, and biological factors they face. It is better to enhance moods brought about by hormones and external circumstances by adopting a healthy lifestyle and surrounding yourself with positive people in a social environment.
