Depression and Anxiety Disorders
Hello Gonzalez,
Your presentation on depression was very insightful; the statistics show that at least about 7% of the general population has been diagnosed with depression, which shows that it’s a concern. Your organization is beneficial as it systematically discusses the condition’s risk factors, symptoms, and pathology. The risk factors include family history with the condition, abuse, whether physical, emotional, or sexual, increased levels, and prolonged grief and chronic pain. Mental disorders and sleep issues also cause depression. Symptoms of depression include feelings of despair, emptiness, discouragement, loss of interest, low energy, and anxiety, which can be manifested by poor concentration, rapid changes in weight, and loss of appetite (Dysregulation, 2018). Depression affects neurotransmitters and thus alters the functioning of the brain, leading to serious health problems and decreased quality of life. Depression can be managed and treated within a care setting; the treatment options include counseling or psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, and medications such as antidepressants.
The significant practice method, however, in modern practice is the use of medications because of their easy availability; they, however, have to be tested before being used on an individual because each type of medication reacts differently for each patient. I also enjoyed reading the part about anxiety disorders. You explained that anxiety is triggered by fear and flight response to a perceived threat. It also explains the effects on an individual’s social functioning, which can affect school, work, and relationships. The risk factors for anxiety include a family history of the condition, childhood traumatic experiences, and depressing life events. The purpose for discussing both anxiety and depression together and separately seems to be based on the fact that the two conditions often occur together and exhibit similar symptoms.
