Demographic Market Data and Health Care Business Decisions

Demographic Market Data and Health Care Business Decisions

Demographic market data are critical elements of healthcare business decisions. Different population groups in terms of age, race, gender, culture, and current health conditions have varied demands for certain healthcare services, products, and treatments. Such diversity in population demographics puts pressure on healthcare organizations to develop services and products that align with the varied and changing needs of the population. The demographic data develop insights into disease correlations that are important in policy decisions regarding the management of diseases (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2018).

It has been proven that the effectiveness and efficacy of medications and treatment regimens vary across ethnicities and races. For instance, the effectiveness of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) as an anti-hypertensive treatment and the reduction of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risks has been shown to vary across racial differences and gender (Barthold et al., 2018). Demographic data also highlight the history of certain health conditions based on family, ethnicity, region, age, and race and help estimate the probability of certain populations suffering from such health conditions based on their demographics.

Certain racial groups within diverse populations are more predisposed to specific diseases than others within the same population. For instance, American Indians/Alaska Natives and Black Americans are more likely to suffer from obesity and diabetes than non-Hispanic White populations (Cheng et al., 2019). Demographic data and information can also help identify socioeconomic differences and concerns that are important to making healthcare business decisions, such as race and income and the ability to take up health insurance and have access to quality health care. Therefore, demographic data in such cases would benefit healthcare businesses in making decisions on the design and development of healthcare services, products, and care plans that are more person- and disease-specific and patient-centered for patient satisfaction, promoting equitable healthcare, and business growth.
