Definition and Prevalence of Giftedness

Definition and Prevalence of Giftedness

Giftedness is a person’s ability, talent, or aptitude in one or more areas of human endeavor, including but not limited to intellectual, academic, creative, art, and leadership, among others. The incidence of giftedness differs; however, it is assumed that only two to five percent of learners may be characterized as gifted (Baccassino & Pinnelli, 2023). Such a capability to perform at a high level and achieve extraordinary differentiates talented people. It provides the rationale for the identification of the processes and mechanisms that can help support and encourage the development of giftedness.

Screening is the initial phase of the identification of children with unique gifts and talents to receive special education services. In this case, teachers, parents, or any other professional follow the child’s performance, behavior, and characteristics that may be suggestive of giftedness, such as complex language, good memory, or high curiosity and problem-solving skills. This screening process assists in determining which children can benefit from further assessments, thus creating a platform for a better evaluation. The evaluation frequently involves such tests as intelligence tests, achievement tests, and tests of special abilities or giftedness, which provide the examiner with more detailed information about the child’s intellectual, academic, or creative potential (Baccassino & Pinnelli, 2023). According to the obtained assessment, children who have been defined according to the criteria established for giftedness are formally identified, meaning they are provided with appropriate educational services.

Once the children have been identified as having unique gifts and talents, they may be given various services that will enable them to face challenges in school. These may include acceleration, which allows a child to learn faster or to do higher level classes; enrichment, which gives the child intensive, advanced, or additional learning within the regular classroom or through special programs grouping which puts the child in a class or group with other gifted children, and mentorship which links the child with an experienced person or an expert in the child’s area of interest or strength. Thus, acknowledging and developing the talents of such children, educational systems strive to help them achieve the highest results in their giftedness and improve their academic, social, and emotional outcomes.
