Reflecting on the video How Addiction Happens and my experiences from elementary through college highlight varied stress-coping skills. Notably, dealing with academic pressure and family dynamics was overwhelming, often leading to anxiety. When I started my academic endeavors at the college level, managing time effectively and reducing stress levels, including methods such as exercise, became important to me. The most stressful factor involved conflicts between academic obligations and personal responsibilities, sleep loss, and social isolation (American Addiction Centers, 2020).

To enhance my coping strategies, I developed two SMART goals. First, by the end of this semester, I aim to incorporate a 30-minute daily meditation into my routine to improve mental clarity and reduce anxiety, measuring progress through a weekly reflection journal. Second, I plan to achieve a healthier sleep schedule by sleeping at least seven hours each night, starting within two weeks, using a sleep tracker app to monitor my sleep patterns and adjustments needed (Bégin et al., 2022).

Some possible courses of action include scheduling a time for meditation, for example, after-school study time, which serves as a mental rinse, and setting a night’s rest-activity schedule, such as reading a book or even gentle exercises before bed. These steps will help to control stress and, at the same time, improve the quality of life (Ernstmeyer & Christman, 2022).

The rise in vaping among teens has sparked significant concern due to its potential health impacts, including increased risk of addiction and lung disease. Literature underscores the trend of vaping as a preferred method of tobacco and marijuana use among adolescents, posing risks like nicotine dependency and respiratory issues (Jones & Salzman, 2020). Addressing this, effective treatment approaches for teen substance use include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing, which have shown efficacy in altering addictive behaviors and enhancing motivation toward recovery (McHugh et al., 2010).

Considering the therapeutic setting, group counseling would be more advantageous for teens dealing with substance abuse. The peer support inherent in group settings can foster a sense of community and shared recovery, which is crucial for adolescents who often feel isolated in their experiences (Topping, 2022). This communal approach enhances engagement and allows for shared learning and peer encouragement, which are critical elements in sustaining recovery among youth.
