Explain the origins of Dadaism. What did it aim to achieve? What distinctions are made between Dadaism and Duchampism? Why are these “isms” categorized as idea art?

Idea art involves the presentation of an art piece as a medium of suggesting ideas to an audience. As the audience converses on the art and the message is passing, the ideas circulate between the audience. Idea art is mostly themed on anti-art characteristics. There are various idea art types: Duchampism, Conceptualism, Lettrism, and New Dadaism (Martin & Jacobus, 2019).

Dadaism was an art movement that arose in 1916, when artists who fled their countries met in Europe, specifically Zurich and Switzerland. Dadaism’s goal was to oppose the political, social, and cultural practices and values during the times of World War 1. The Dadaists met their objective through their work, whereby they tried to make art that was anti-art. Furthermore, Dadaism represented the artists’ antagonism and fury towards their civilization (Martin & Jacobus, 2019).

Duchampism originated from Marcel Duchamp and is humor-based. L.H.O.O.Q is a hilarious type of anti-art. It involves the unhallowing of previously valuable art to pass the hilarious idea. A good example of Duchampism is the Mona Lisa (Martin & Jacobus, 2019).

Dadaism and Duchampism are different. The difference is clear in the ideas passed through the art. Even though Marcel Duchamp cooperated with the Dadaists, his work conveyed Duchampism and not Dadaism. Dadaism is an idea art that conveys ideas of anti-civilization with the consideration of the world war. On the other hand, Duchampism isn’t anti-civilization but rather anti-establishment by devaluing art previously held in high regard. Also, Duchampism uses art to convey messages of humor, while Dadaism conveys the ideas of frustration towards civilization. Dadaism and Duchampism have one thing in common: they are both anti-art.

To conclude, Dadaism and Duchampism are types of idea art in that they both lead to the development of ideas in their audiences through their art. Dadaism starts conversations against civilization, while Duchampism starts conversations with humorous messages.
