The use of a VPN has both advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage of using a VPN is that it offers safety through anonymity. This is because when an individual uses a VPN, the network information appears as if it emanates from a location different from the actual one (Iqbal & Riadi 61). The disguise related to network data is important in helping VPN users stay safe since any third-party individual looking to acquire information illegally gets the VPN server’s data instead (Iqbal & Riadi 63). The other benefit of the VPN is that it provides a secure connection for remote work. In an incident where an employee works on a computer remotely without a VPN, they would be posing great danger to the confidential information held on its network. However, using a VPN ensures that confidential information is hidden from unauthorized users.

The third advantage of using a VPN is that it necessitates bypassing the geo-locked content. Many entertainment websites only have their content accessible within certain regions. When one uses a VPN, the connection appears to be coming from the designated region, enabling one to enjoy the content irrespective of location (Iqbal & Riadi 64). The last advantage under consideration is that using a VPN enables one to save money on region-based eCommerce. Since most businesses often price-discriminate based on the location of operation, using a VPN is vital because it allows one to access offers that are not affected by shady pricing tactics.

On the other hand, using a VPN also has its share of disadvantages. The first bottleneck of using a VPN is that it slows down connection speed. Creating and maintaining the VPN takes a substantial amount of bandwidth, which slows connection speeds (Popov & Parahonco 179). The other disadvantage of using a VPN is its complicated setup. Incorrect configuration of the VPN often leads to information leaks, which draws the attention of hackers who may end up targeting these types of networks. Thirdly, dropped connections are the other disadvantage of using a VPN, which makes the information on the network easily accessible by anyone on the network (Popov & Parahonco 180). Lastly, using a VPN may be quite frustrating when users are playing games. This is because it often results in slow connectivity, hence hanging the game. Besides these disadvantages, a VPN is a good choice since the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
