Beliefs Regarding the Drinking and Other Drug Use Practices

My opinions on the drinking and other drug-using habits of Latino or Hispanic Americans include a wide spectrum of viewpoints and actions. While alcohol is typically served at social events and cultural festivals for Hispanic or Latino cultures, there can be significant differences in how these events are approached with drinking. While some people might moderately drink as a social activity, others might not drink for cultural or personal reasons.

Asian Americans exhibit a wide range of views toward drug and alcohol usage, reflecting their different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Certain Asian cultures have historically placed a stronger emphasis on moderation and responsibility when it comes to alcohol drinking (Atkinson et al., 2023). This viewpoint can, however, differ greatly, and the drinking habits of younger generations may be influenced by acculturation. On the other hand, African Americans display a range of views and actions when it comes to drug and alcohol usage due to their rich and varied cultural background. Although the African American community does not have a single viewpoint, historical variables like the effects of the war on drugs have contributed to differences in the number of drug-related arrests and convictions.

It is clear from reading Chapter 4 that the facts and case studies about Native Americans and Alaska Natives provide insight into the particular difficulties and historical contexts shaping their drug and alcohol use habits. In addition to examining the effects of historical events, forced relocations, and sociocultural influences on Native Americans’ connection with alcohol, the chapter highlights the significance of cultural awareness and competency while addressing substance misuse among indigenous communities. Understanding and addressing substance use within diverse ethnic and cultural groups requires a nuanced and culturally informed approach (Ahad et al., 2023). This is evidenced by the differences between historical influences on Native American populations and those influencing Hispanic or Latino Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans. It reaffirms that accurate assessments and successful treatments catered to each community’s unique requirements require a thorough understanding of the cultural values and historical background.
