When commemorating important occasions in the classroom, I have gained a better appreciation for the significance of avoiding prejudice and being sensitive to other cultures due to my own experiences. As a kid, I remember my school celebrated holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah. Still, I also recall that there was an attempt made to accommodate students who came from various cultural backgrounds. For instance, some activities centered on the spirit of the holiday, such as crafting greeting cards for those struggling financially or donating presents to a charity that helps children. My instructor also attempted to include activities that were significant to students who came from various backgrounds. For example, we sang traditional songs and learned about cultural practices related to the occasion. Because of this, I felt included and valued, and I gained an understanding of the cultural backgrounds of my classmates as a result. As a result of this experience, I now understand how important it is to observe anti-bias measures and cultural sensitivity whenever one celebrates a significant occasion in the classroom.
