The Importance of Cultural Humility for Human Services Practitioners

Cultural humility is a process that focuses on personal critique, self-reflection, and acknowledging biases that could impact how a person interacts with others. Cultural humility is essential for human services practitioners because it enables them to prevent bias when assessing a client’s needs, establishing their eligibility for services and benefits, and guiding the client in assessing the benefits and services best suited to meet their needs. Cultural humility also increases a human service practitioner’s willingness to help a client. According to LaFasto & Larson (2011), a person’s predisposition to respond to an opportunity to help someone is influenced by their beliefs about themselves. Therefore, human services practitioners should conduct a self-assessment and reflect on their beliefs to effectively respond to the opportunities to help those in need.

How Human Services Professional Practitioners Can Demonstrate Cultural Humility

Human service practitioners encounter various situations where they are required to work with a diverse group. The most important thing that they should consider is establishing rapport and respect. According to Hays (2008), knowing a client’s identity is vital to determine how the client sees the world, what they value, how others may treat them, and how they may behave in various situations. Therefore, a human services professional practitioner can demonstrate cultural humility when working with diverse populations by asking less direct questions about a client’s cultural background. For example, instead of asking a client about their cultural identity, the human services professional practitioner may request the client to tell them about themselves and their background. Additionally, a human services professional practitioner may also demonstrate cultural humility by asking open-ended questions to understand clients’ experiences rather than restricting them to specific responses. For example, they may ask a client to narrate their challenges and causes to determine the appropriate services and benefits they need.
