Crisis Intervention- Applying the Seven-Stage Model in a College Counseling Setting

Crisis Intervention- Applying the Seven-Stage Model in a College Counseling Setting

A 30-year-old Hispanic woman who has been in a relationship with her fiancé for five years finds him in bed with his colleague. Since then, she has become a regular visitor at a local bar. Her productivity at work has lowered, and she is socially isolated from friends and family. After a month, she seeks help, claiming that she has had enough of everything and feels at a loss since she has nothing else to live for. She claimed to have invested a lot in the relationship and had never imagined such betrayal from her fiancé. Furthermore, she states that she was once an alcoholic, and the situation has triggered a relapse, which has also affected her productivity at work, and she is on the verge of losing her job.

Using the seven-stage crisis intervention model by Robert, I will help the client through her current crisis. The first stage involves planning and conducting a detailed biopsychosocial and imminent or lethality danger assessment (Roberts & Ottens, 2005). I would assess the client’s psychological status and understand what she means when she claims to have had enough. I would gauge the lethality of her suicidal thoughts and plans and find out if she has already made any suicidal attempts. I would also assess her social condition to find out if she isolates herself and is feeling depressed. In order to do all these, establishing a rapport with her will be necessary to boost her confidence and trust in me. This will require me to maintain a non-judgmental attitude and show empathy for the client. At stage 3, I will need to identify the major problems experienced by the client. I will try to assess why the client is currently seeking help and find out the coping strategies she has been using. At the moment, it is evident that her relapse and excessive intake of alcohol have been her way of dealing with the problem. Through further interaction and assessment, I will be able to take note of any other styles that she might have been using, for instance, making use of other drugs. Stage 4 involves dealing with the client’s emotions and feelings. At this stage, the crisis worker is advised to permit the client to express their feelings, vent, and explain the present crisis situation (Robert & Ottens, 2005). In order to do so, I will make use of skills such as active listening, probing, paraphrasing, and reflecting feelings in order to ensure that the client feels listened to and understood. I will also try to play the devil’s advocate to bring to light the client’s maladaptive coping and help her question the effectiveness of her coping strategies.

Stage 5 involves generating and exploring alternatives. At this stage, I will work collaboratively with the client to find potent solutions, such as referral to a support group to help her deal with the relapse and refer her to counselling if needed. A no-suicide contract should also be considered. At stage 6, implementing an action plan is required. This will require collaborating with the individuals in the client’s social circle. Hispanics place a great value on family togetherness, and therefore, it would be important to incorporate the client’s family to aid in her recovery and lessen isolation. When necessary, hospitalization will be considered. The last stage involves a follow-up of the effectiveness of the crisis intervention. By conducting a follow-up on the client, I will assess her overall functioning at work, her satisfaction with the ongoing treatment such as alcoholics’ support group, and any present stressors and how she handles the
