Creating a Productive Learning Environment
What age students do you hope/plan to teach? (Example: early elementary (K-2), upper elementary (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8), or high school (grades 9-12). (1 point)
I desire to teach Pre-K or Kindergarten.
Considering the ideas and information you have read in this chapter, think about the student population you want to teach and address how you will: (6 points) *Please use the information/ideas discussed in the text to formulate your answers.
Create a positive classroom climate.
A positive classroom climate is where learners feel emotionally and physically safe to engage with their peers and teachers. I will create such an environment by first controlling and ensuring learners do not engage in aggressive behaviors such as name-calling and bullying because such behaviors undermine the feeling of safety and students’ willingness to open up to others. I will also create a positive environment by creating a welcoming classroom by displaying attractive posters and pictures of learners and also greeting and welcoming learners at the door.
Create learning communities in your classroom.
I will create an environment that welcomes and encourages diversity where all learners, both boys and girls and those with disabilities work together. Everyone will participate in learning activities supportive of each other’s efforts and beliefs so they can succeed. I will do this by treating learners as individuals and refusing boys to sit on the left and girls on the right; rather, I will allow both boys and girls to sit together and involve all learners in the learning process.
Develop responsibility in your students.
Kauchak and Eggen (2015) maintain that developing responsibility is the most significant challenge for teachers(p.327). Nonetheless, I will build accountability in my students by explicitly teaching responsibility and practically demonstrating the repercussions of irresponsible behavior. For instance, I will teach students it is their responsibility to hand in their homework in the morning by giving explicit examples.
Then, describe how you will create a productive learning environment for your students by addressing each of the areas discussed in the book (8 points) *Please use the information in the text to formulate your answers.
Communicating caring
I will communicate care to my students by identifying them by their names, greeting them daily and using plural references such as ‘we’ and ‘our,’ and avoiding personal contacts like ‘you’. I will also show care by spending more time with learners during breaks or after school. Finally, I will use personal non-verbal communication, like smiling and maintaining eye contact while talking to learners.
Organizing your classroom
Kauchak and Eggen (2015) affirm that planning or organization is vital for effective classroom management as it is one of the first things a teacher will need (p.331). Therefore, I will ensure my classroom is organized by creating well-developed routines for learners, beginning activities and classes on time, and preparing teaching materials in advance before class time.
Preventing problems through planning
I will prevent issues through planning by creating classroom procedures and rules and considering the developmental differences among learners. For example, as a teacher who desires to teach Pre-K or Kindergarten, I will first need to consider the development levels of these learners so that I can create rules and procedures that align with their groups.
Teaching effectively
I will ensure effective teaching in my class by approximately planning for lessons to ensure that I involve my students maximally in learning so that they do not lose their attention but remain motivated to learn. I will also ensure I prepare representations and examples of the topic I am to teach and plan for assessments to help determine the degree to which the learning objectives have been reached.

2) Considering the ideas and information you have read in this chapter, think about the student population you want to teach and address how you will: (6 points) *please use the information/ideas discussed in the text to formulate your answers
- a) create a positive classroom climate
- b) create learning communities in your classroom
- c) develop responsibility in your students
3) Then, describe how you will create a productive learning environment for your students by addressing each of the areas discussed in the book: (8 points) *please use information found in the text to formulate your answers
- a) communicating caring
- b) organizing your classroom
- c) preventing problems through planning
- d) teaching effectively
You may submit your response in outline format above. Just be sure you address each part of the above questions.
Each response to the above questions should be at least 2-3 sentences – you cannot adequately answer the questions in a few words or one sentence. I don’t need an essay – but I do need complete answers in complete sentences.
