Creating a Positive and Safe Classroom Environment
I remember one of my favorite high school math teachers introduced a new topic about finding the volume of three-dimensional figures. I was always terrible at math and would get lost easily in class. To help us understand the concept, she began by providing a real-world example (Sueb et al., 2020). She gave a short story about how she and her friends went out on a beach trip last weekend and how they packed their things in crates. She then asked us to predict what the volume of her crate would be. We made our guesses, and she told us we would find out later. Everyone became attentive and groomed for success when she explained that we would be using the same method to find the volume of our crates, which she would provide us. She walked around and dropped off a crate at each student’s desk.
The teacher always had a positive attitude and was very patient with her students. If someone was struggling, she would take the time to explain the concept in a different way. She engaged her students in the lesson by asking questions and starting class discussions (Kauchak & Eggen, 2017). And she made sure to create a safe environment where her students felt comfortable asking questions and participating in class.

On discipline, she was firm but fair. She had high expectations for her students and would not tolerate any disruptive behavior. But she was also quick to praise her students for their successes. Every student felt became comfortable and confident in her classroom. Time management was also key in her classroom. She always started and ended class on time and used class time effectively. The lesson was organized and flowed smoothly from one concept to the next.
Her high expectations, patience, and ability to engage her students helped them learn effectively. Her firm but fair discipline policy kept the class focused and on track. For example, no one would dare disrupt her class because they knew she would not tolerate it. As a result, her students excelled in her class and had fun learning simultaneously.

Creating a Positive and Safe Classroom Environment
Think about classes where you have excelled, learned effectively, and enjoyed…..what was it about those classrooms and teachers that stand out?
Can you see how the teachers in your favorite classes displayed some of the attributes discussed in this chapter?
Submit a short description of a classroom/teacher whom you believe managed their classroom well. (300 words). Tell me how that teacher handled discipline. Student engagement – where the students active participants or was the instruction more teacher-centered? What kinds of things did that teacher do to promote a positive and safe learning environment? How did your chosen teacher display the attributes discussed in this chapter?
My hope is that you will be able to see how your chosen, effective teacher incorporated some of the aspects of this chapter into their classrooms. You probably did not notice these things when you were a student in their classroom – but having read this chapter, my hope is that you can see how they achieved a productive and safe classroom by following many of the practices discussed in Chapter 10.
