Course Reflection
The most interesting thing that I have learned this semester revolves around self-concept. I have learned that it is how people perceive themselves, that is, how they perceive their abilities, behaviors, and exceptional traits. Part of the self-concept involves statements such as ‘I am a kind individual, or I make a really good friend.’ It is interesting how much self-concept tends to have on social interactions. Typically, having a positive self-concept and strong self-esteem enhances people’s capacity to relate with other individuals, not forgetting their facility to love and be loved. The more a person perceives themselves positively, the higher the likelihood of great relationships. Accordingly, I have particularly struggled in the area of social relationships, and as such, this topic gave me a lot of insight. The idea that all people have a self-concept, that is, an idea of who they are and that the conceptualization tends to be comparatively continuous over time, is instinctively interesting (Oyserman 500). I intend to apply the self-concept aspects in improving my relationships.
A significant lesson that I will take from social psychology is that social situations play a great role in forming self-concept. Typically, the interactions that people have can shape their perceptions and self-concept. An approach to creating self-concept is reflected in the appraisal procedure, whereby people imagine how other individuals see them or perceive them. In addition, people could compare themselves to others, and this could affect how they see themselves. For this reason, people will, at times, rate themselves against people who are doing better in life than them. Consequently, I will apply these concepts in comprehending people’s self-concepts and the reasons behind them.
