Course Competency in Nursing Practice

Describe how you achieved each course competency, including at least one example of new knowledge gained related to that competency.

This course entailed various competencies that I focused on gradually achieving. One of the competencies was applying strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing practice when providing care for clients with neurological disorders. I achieved this competency by volunteering to work as a caregiver in an assisted living facility in my neighborhood. I gained knowledge on how to predict patient’s needs and communicate with patients with neurological disorders. The second competency was outlining appropriate nursing strategies for providing care to perioperative clients. I achieved this competency by reading various case studies on delivering perioperative care and watching movies and TV series with various scenes to get an overview of what is required of me in various scenarios. I was able to gain knowledge on important medical procedures that should be considered when attending to perioperative clients. The third competency was comparing nursing interventions for clients with complex disorders. I achieved this competency by comparing case studies on the same to get different perspectives and choose the most effective one. I was able to gain knowledge on various medical interventions and their effectiveness in handling complex disorders.

The fourth competency was identifying strategies for safe nursing practice of the client with multi-system organ failure. I achieved this competency by watching different Tv series and movies focusing on providing nursing care for patients with multi-system organ failure. I was able to gain knowledge on different safe nursing practices I can use in different scenarios. The fifth objective was prioritizing nursing interventions for clients with medical emergencies. I achieved this competency by participating in handling medical emergencies when I was volunteering in the assisted living facility in my neighborhood. I was able to gain knowledge on common medical emergencies among old patients. The final competency was summarizing the nurse’s role and care strategies for clients during disasters. I achieved this competency by reviewing summaries prepared by other nurses to determine the most important things to consider. I was able to gain knowledge on the role of nurses during disasters.

Describe how you achieved the transferable skill, Critical Thinking, including at least one example of new knowledge gained related to the transferable skill

I achieved critical thinking when applying the knowledge I had gathered on nursing practice to attend to older people in the assisted living facility I was working at as a volunteer. I applied critical thinking to determine the best nursing practice to use to deal with clients who had dementia because most of them were reluctant to cooperate in taking medication. I acquired new knowledge on psychological intervention, mainly when dealing with patients with neurological disorders that make them aggressive.

Describe how this new knowledge will impact your nursing practice.

The new knowledge on providing psychological care to patients with neurological disorders will enable me to provide appropriate psychological care for patients with these disorders and identify signs of neurological disorders among my patients to ensure that the disorders are addressed before they become worse.
