Continuous Quality Improvement
Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is a tool of management that enables healthcare workers to question the facility’s status and find improvement strategies. A practical tool can be incorporated into daily work procedures. The goal in healthcare is to ensure that the facilities offer services that exceed the client’s expectations (Tibeihaho & Nkolo, 2021). To meet this goal, continuous improvement is important and can be achieved through the application of CQI.
In a practical situation, CQI can be used to reduce the number of deaths resulting from infection.
In the USA, sepsis is a major cause of death. At least half of the mortalities in facilities can be associated with sepsis. Thus, early diagnosis is important in preventing the death of patients. Considering this dire situation in most facilities, adopting CQI is important in improving the outcomes (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, 2006). In the position of a nurse, it is impossible to initiate this process. However, in such a situation, which has occurred in some of the facilities where I worked, I fulfilled my role in the chain. The management identified that the diagnosis and management processes should undergo critical review to include an evidence-based perspective. Standardizing the methods used to manage the condition is critical in ensuring that the healthcare providers can gain control of the outcome.
The need to curb the under-diagnosis of sepsis makes the implementation of CQI urgent. The ability to reverse the condition is dependent on the diagnosis. The process of reviewing the management of sepsis improved the statistics related to the condition. For instance, the facility reduced the rate of mortality by 1 percent. There was a 4 percent reduction in emergency admissions and the length of stay among septic patients. These improvements confirmed that the facility had been relying on inconclusive management methods that affected outcomes negatively.
