Continuous Quality Improvement

Continuous Quality Improvement

Continuous quality improvement (CQI) has led to improved healthcare delivery and patient outcomes (Knudsen et al., 2019). The healthcare space continuously redefines morally acceptable healthcare services to ensure a patient’s quality of life. Trends in healthcare, such as pandemics, have dictated quality improvement in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic led to increased use of healthcare technology such as telemedicine. Notably, continuous quality improvement includes prevention measures against specific diseases leading to a decreased diagnosis. Patients suffering from chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes are educated on proper disease management, such as lifestyle adjustments leading to decreased hospital admissions. There has been a decrease in the number of patients with chronic diseases who visit the emergency departments. Continuous quality improvement ensures that vulnerable populations such as the elderly and people with disabilities receive quality, timely, and adequate healthcare, leading to decreased hospital admissions of vulnerable populations. Accordingly, continuous quality improvement has ensured that healthcare workers are adequately trained. With decreased admissions, increased patient outcomes, and availability of quality healthcare, healthcare professionals are progressively experiencing fulfillment in their roles. In addition, continuous quality improvement has ensured the availability of an adequate workforce; therefore, healthcare professionals work without burnout (O’Donnell & Gupta, 2022).

The evolution of continuous quality improvement has significantly been caused by competition from the international market (O’Donnell & Gupta, 2022). Healthcare organizations, nationally and internationally, are competing for the same patients. International organizations offer healthcare at a reduced price to encourage medical tourism. It is, therefore, crucial that despite the increasing healthcare prices, domestic healthcare organizations must ensure they provide quality healthcare to show value for money. The provision of quality healthcare ensures domestic healthcare organizations survive the competitive markets.
