Reality hits him further when he realizes that Jacosta is his mother. From how Apollo shared the events with Oedipus, it’s clear that Oedipus’s fate had been sealed, and nothing could change it.

Theatre of alienation focuses on encasing ideas. Theatre for separation attracts the audience by allowing it to create a strong identity with the character. The audience gives in to the characters, affecting the communication of the message intended. ‘It involves a conscious relinquishment or surrender to secure the desired end: namely, unity with the social substance’ (Schacht 1970, p. 36). Through alienation, the universal essence of man is attained. Lighting forms an integral aspect not just for the audience but also for the cast. Lighting adds to the scenery and atmosphere, as well as the beauty and clarity of the performance. The central board controls the lighting to allow for refocusing on different aspects. When using a backlash example to illustrate how King Oedipus remembers his late father, whom he killed, the central board can shift the light from regular to black and white. The auditorium size will guide how, where, and what lighting systems can be used.

Through masking or designed scenery, the backstage is easily hidden from the audience. The ground plan allows the director to scale the set and the location of all aspects, such as props and performers’ space. Set mapping illustrates to the directors how the lighting system will focus and avoid objects. Set mapping creates room for scene transitions through the wheeled wagons for different scenes and table revolvers to transition from one scene to another. Props are large objects that create a sense of place; large toy pieces are chairs, desks, and carts. Setting props makes the situation feel more natural and unique. Setting props are so large that it’s best to keep them as versatile as possible. Only a few should be present in the play area, such as a countertop used to play store, operation, post office, or any other scenario that utilizes a table or desk.

Props allow the audience to create a medium of communication with the actors by using personal props to make sense or meaning of behavior, attitude, body language, or body movement in aspects that are mimed. For contemporary performances, phones can be provided to ease communication between parties. Costume’s color forms an integral component in modern-day theatre. For effective communication with the audience, color creates meaning. For example, the director will use rainbow colors to illustrate relationships based on the same gender aspects in modern-day theatre. Through color, the audience can identify the sex orientation of the actors in the set and create meaning depending on the action and the wordings passed forth. It can be communicated through the accessories and colors worn by the actors or the color of their clothes.

Costumes depict the period and the actors’ situation. For the modern-day dramatization of King Oedipus, the king will dress in flashy clothes with much more gold-coated and fitted accessories, illustrating the sign of power and leadership. Part of the costumes will be the make-up, the wigs, and paints that will enable the actor’s transformation into the character. Wigs and body; based on the mode it’s applied and the intended information of the painting, it will communicate to the audience specific relevant information.

Song, as a language, expresses the playwright’s innermost thoughts, emotions, and feelings about social issues. Songs or music will evoke the audience to deeper lengths, creating a relationship between the audience and the performers. This communication and attachment develop a practical and clear understanding of the message being passed. Songs lay a foundation for modern dance to cooperate. Language, through contemporary dance, creates an effortless mode of telling stories. Due to monotony, dance offers a rhythmic accompaniment of answers to both the dancers or performers and those watching, which is a crucial universal need. Dance cooperates with the audience and the actors in communication and understanding the different messages intended for the audience.

Monologues are used as part of language to pass and attain specific messages. It can be achieved through a stand-actor monologue and illustrating a performance section or a group monologue. In a monologue, originality is key. Originality will ensure the explicit depiction of who the character is, who the character represents, and what the symbol stands for. Characters must be able to perceive the different variations of performances that are required. The need to interpret, evaluate, and analyze what’s needed for the presentation and adapt to a high work intensity will be essential when selecting characters. The characters are also required to have a background in drama and theatre, be highly confident persons, persons able to memorize, practice projections, and have great enunciation exercises.
