Consumer Research Report: Ripple Foods

Describe the basic demographic, psychographics, and likely lifestyle regarding 3 different potential publics/consumers/audiences your client might want to reach. Make sure you highlight how each public differs, and then support your answers with stats, data, and credible resources you find online.

One of the target audiences for Ripple Foods dairy products is health-conscious customers. The health-conscious customers are looking for dairy-free products as a preventative measure for the health risks associated with regular dairy products (Ripple Foods, 2015). For instance, these customers have lactose intolerance, which is present in regular dairy products. Some of them avoid dairy products for religious reasons, or just prefer a healthier lifestyle.

Another core target audience is athletes and fitness enthusiasts. This segment seeks food products with low sugar and high protein alternatives (Ripple Foods, 2015). By cutting sugar, the clients enhance their energy levels, while high protein content is crucial for muscle development and training recovery. Ripple Foods appeals to this segment by providing food products that fuel training.

Additionally, Ripple Foods appeals to customers who prioritize ethical and environmentally friendly products. This segment is mainly composed of young demographics, such as Gen Z and millennials. Ripple Foods’ commitment to sustainability and health aligns with the values and demands of this segment.

For the sake of this section, revisit your information regarding your client. What does the company do well? Where does its skill and passion overlap? What benefits or values can your client offer the public? Define and describe the niche these values create. In short, what specific value (i.e. content tilt) can your client specialize? (Refer back to Joe Pulizzi’s video on content marketing if you need to do so). How do you know? Describe and illustrate what that will/should look like.

Sustainability is one of Ripple Foods’ fundamental values that guides its operations. Among the sustainability initiatives implemented by the company in its operations is the reduction of water wastage. The company utilizes 86% less water compared to other dairy companies (Ripple Foods, 2015). Also, recycling processes help the company save on water consumption; hence contributing to environmental sustainability.

Also, the company leverages customer engagement and feedback in new product development. Real-time customer feedback helps Ripple Foods develop new products to meet unmet client needs. For instance, customers’ feedback helped the company develop sugar-free kids’ packages. Such feedback made it possible for the company to embrace the fact that it is not only adults who have issues with sugar consumption. As market needs keep evolving, customer feedback will help Ripple Foods keep up with emerging trends.

Based on these insights, one can conclude that Ripple Foods’ customers’ buying behavior is heavily influenced by customers’ focus on health and wellness. As a result, they will patronize companies that produce products that offer them desired health benefits while aligning with their values. The company’s feedback mechanism will continue playing a key role in helping Ripple Foods develop products that address customers’ core health concerns.

After you have identified your client’s skills, passions, and perspectives, place your 3 potential publics/consumer groups (which you describe in question 1) into a specific hierarchy ranging in priority.

Ripple Foods’ main customers are those who are focused on health and wellness. The concern for saturated fat content, cholesterol, and lactose intolerance has influenced some customers to go for non-dairy products that are free from undesirable ingredients. The second target customers are athletes and those who are into fitness. These demographics resort to Ripple Foods products because the company offers low-sugar, low-fat, and calorie-free products. The third segment in terms of hierarchy is those customers who prioritize brands that contribute to environmental preservation. Although Ripple Foods’ environmental footprint is minimal given its small size, its commitment to environmental sustainability appeals to Gen Z and millennial customers who value the environment.

Lastly, choose a target audience to use for the remainder of your project assignments. Which audience do you believe will benefit the most from your client’s service? What kind of audience/consumer will most likely be attracted to your client’s specialized service? Why? Support your answer.

Going forward, one of the consumer segments that will benefit immensely from Ripple Foods’ offers are those who focus on clean-label products and vegans. Clean-label products refer to simple and natural ingredients (Hirpara, 2011). This demographic also requires foods rich in calcium, Vitamin D, and B12. Currently, the company relies on the pea protein isolate to appeal to this group of consumers. Ripple Foods should explore more sources for clean-label products to reduce its overreliance on pea extracts.

Reitano et al. (2024) aver that athletes are willing to pay for potentially important food in their diet. Particularly, athletes prefer vegan-based foods with high protein content, given their contribution to nourishment and overall well-being. Therefore, Ripple Foods can tailor its marketing strategy to target active athletes and gym enthusiasts. Apart from fulfilling athletes’ nutritional needs, the specialized clean-label products with high protein content align with the broader food values and expectations of this consumer segment.
