Concepts Learned and Importance to My Career
One of the knowledge that I have learned in this course is the knowledge of research in psychology. I have enhanced my knowledge of various ways of conducting research, such as naturalistic observation, archival research, survey research, and case studies (Feldman, 2018). I had a particular interest in survey research and naturalistic observation. I am always curious to find out how individuals behave or act the way they do. This kind of curiosity is considered common among humans and enhances one’s ability to be more observant of anything new and enhances cognition (Kidd & Hayden, 2015). After learning naturalistic observation, I have become more observant of behaviors, which has enhanced my curiosity about various things. For instance, I am highly interested to learn why the rate of suicide, depression, obesity, and eating disorders have greatly increased among teenagers. I am also interested to know if the internet or social media plays a role in enhancing such behaviors.
Naturalistic observation can help me observe these behaviors even though I would not explain the causes of the behaviors (Cherry, 2019). I can also obtain data on such behaviors by conducting survey research and correlational and even experimental studies in the future, which will help me explain some of the concepts that I am interested in. Experimental research requires strictly following a scientific research design (Lumen, 2021). By formulating a hypothesis, I can begin conducting proper research to understand, for instance, how eating disorders relate to prolonged exposure to social media. The knowledge of these concepts has enhanced my research skills as I have improved my ability to collect information and analyze it. Therefore, this will be instrumental in my career as it will help me perform better research and analysis.
