Concept of Health and Health Promotion
The concept of health was initially viewed as the absence of disease. As time went on, the new definition of health included more factors that define a healthy person. For example, the individual’s ability to cope and continue to live well despite the disease. In the 19th century, as new cities emerged, sanitation measures were inadequate, and infectious diseases became widespread. These conditions led to the formation of organizations that promoted health promotion in the populations. The concept of health changed as health promotion grew and influenced the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of the individual (GCU, 2018).
Wellness is a state of well-being. Factors that contribute to well-being include the ability to adapt, continue to function, and live life, and how the individual is not entirely free from the absence of disease. Illness is the state of physiologic dysfunction. The person’s illness impacts physical, mental, and social well-being and functioning. Overall well-being is affected by the individual, relationship, community, and society. These three concepts have evolved as health promotion and prevention took precedence in the United States. The government created a culture of health prevention rather than the patient coming in for treatment after the disease progressed. The three concepts also evolved by organizations like the World Health Organization. The wellness of the patient has evolved in the way the individual achieves it by including changes in behaviors, lifestyle choices, health screening, and nutrition interventions. Other factors that changed the three concepts were environment and culture (GCU, 2018).
Health promotion is continuously changing to meet the needs of the population. Health promotion needs to stay current with the issues present in society. Health promotion has changed over time as new evidence-based research is emerging. Health promotion needs to use evidence-based practice because it gives patients up-to-date research and includes patient preferences in the plan of care(GCU, 2018).
