Comparative Analysis of Prosocial and Aggressive Behaviors in Popular Children’s Television Shows

Peppa Pig, Ballerina, as well as Matilda, are all television shows that are created for the young audience. The three programs exhibit significant amounts of prosocial behaviors. In Peppa Pig, some of the prosocial behaviors that are advocated for include listening to and obeying parents and teachers, obeying rules, avoiding fights with friends, sharing, avoiding competitiveness, and being friendly with others. In Ballerina, the children learn that they can achieve their goals through hard work and determination. They also learn the importance of being kind to others and sharing knowledge and skills instead of being jealous and selfish (Thomai and Natassa). In Matilda, the children are exposed to aggressive behaviors through Matilda’s parents and Ms Trunchbull, the headteacher. At the same time, prosocial behaviors are highlighted through Ms Honey, who is Matilda’s favorite teacher. Ms Honey shows genuine concern for the children, listens to them,, and notices their unique abilities. Ms Trunchbull is aggressive and punishes the children violently, while Matilda’s parents are dishonest and uncaring.

The role models in all three shows are engaging enough for the children. For instance, Ms Trunchbull in Matilda creates fear among the students by her physical appearance and behaviors. Upon her sight, the children squirm and retreat. In the classroom, Ms Honey pulls down all art when Ms Trunchbull is expected due to fear. The role models also utilize different methods of communication such as facial expressions, gestures, body language, and verbal communication. In Peppa Pig, the use of songs to instruct children is intense. In Ballerina, the dance practice session is utilized for communicating negative behaviors that may come across as aggressive. For instance, Camille insults Felicie when she sees her at the opera. Such mean behaviors continue to exhibit and culminate into a dance battle which Felicie appears to win. Each of the three shows teaches the young audience positive values by highlighting negative aspects.
