Relationship between Community Justice, Problem-Oriented Policing, and Community Policing
On the one hand, problem-oriented policing (POP) refers to police solving community problems such as crime by first diagnosing the risk factors. POP has proved effective in solving crimes over other models. One of the model’s strengths is that it focuses on creating valuable relationships with the public (Reisig, 2010). It has also proven effective in dealing with crime in areas with elevated risk. Besides, it involves seeking tips from the public when investigating crime. Members can offer any information they may have concerning offenders, such as unreported prior offenses. While at it, officers ask for home-grown ideas on how they can combat crime.
On the other hand, community policing refers to retaining police officers in a particular jurisdiction long enough to familiarize themselves with local people. Police officers are allowed to form relationships with the community such that they can engage the public regularly (Reisig, 2010). Instead of waiting for crimes to occur before responding, the system will enable officers to collect intelligence from community members.
Based on the above illustrations, community justice, problem-oriented policing, and community policing are closely related. One of the cross-cutting similarities across the models is the desire to improve communities.
