Community Healthcare Response
Georgia is generally among the least states in the US prone to natural disasters. However, floods can be a major concern in Georgia and will likely affect Port Wentworth, which is close to the ocean. In 2017, Port Wentworth was among the places impacted by Hurricane Irma’s storm surge. Therefore, there is a need for proper disaster planning and management to be in place in the event of another occurrence.
The overall strategy that medical providers, public health agencies, and healthcare organizations should include in their response plan is to work collaboratively to define the roles of each organization in the event of a disaster. This would mean clear communication on the roles of each organization with well-defined strategies that should be implemented. For instance, all these stakeholders must identify a jurisdictional fatality management lead authority and the strategy to determine the individuals prioritized in a disaster (Centers for Disease Control and Management, 2021).
According to Douglas (2017), collaborative work can enhance the effectiveness of the disaster response. One of the ways to ensure collaboration is to establish a steering group where individuals with the same vision develop specific modules for disaster management. Such individuals bring different skills and knowledge in the management of a disaster. Others have different skills in compiling major incident plans or activating such plans in the context of a hospital. By working collaboratively and ensuring effective communication among stakeholders, medical providers, public health agencies, and healthcare organizations can respond effectively to any natural disaster in the community.
