Community Blood Center of the Carolinas
Blood transfusion is a life-saving practice that requires coordination among various stakeholders. The focus should be shifted to providing adequate and safe blood transfusions. To ensure safety, standard quality guidelines should be embraced during blood screening (Jones et al., 2021). Furthermore, sufficient resources should be allocated to facilitate blood processing and storage (Jones et al., 2021). All stakeholders, such as healthcare providers and administrators, should work in concert to improve blood supply management. The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas should optimize the coordination of its services to avail adequate and safe blood transfusions.
Definition of the Problem
The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) cannot fulfil its projected blood needs. An increase in incidences of blood shortages in the blood bank evidences this. The problem has financial and health implications. Healthcare costs have increased due to the inability to fulfil patients’ blood transfusion demands. Patients incur extra costs on the limited blood available for transfusion. Furthermore, they are forced to purchase blood from other blood centres, hence high transportation costs. Little blood for transfusion increases mortality rates in emergency cases (Rijnhout et al., 2019).
Identification of the Stakeholders
Relevant stakeholders include CBCC management, donors, collaborating hospitals, allied government agencies, and healthcare providers at CBCC. The CBCC management comprises directors, managers, trustees, and other stakeholders. In addition, the CBCC management is responsible for the coordination of activities and feedback delivery. As a result, other stakeholders, such as allied government agencies, are updated on its daily operations. Blood donors are also critical stakeholders at CBCC.
Identification of Alternative Solutions
The problem of blood shortages can be mitigated via three approaches. Firstly, decentralizing blood donations will increase blood donation supplies (WHO, n.d.). The other approach is public sensitization and education on the importance of blood donation (WHO, n.d.). The third approach is embracing strategic management to address technical challenges (Yaakob et al., 2022).
Evaluation of Alternative Solutions
Decentralizing blood donations will increase blood supplies by accessing more community members. Decentralized programs target all members of the community (WHO, n.d.). As such, the number of voluntary donors will increase. Hence, there will be more blood donation supplies. Public sensitization and education on the importance of blood donation are relevant. This strategy informs the public about the existing blood shortage problem and its impact (WHO, n.d.).
Additionally, it equips the public with pertinent information concerning safe blood donation and its impact on saving lives (WHO, n.d.). This is likely to create buy-in and increase the number of donors. Strategic management will achieve better service coordination and optimize planning and resource allocation. Furthermore, strategic management will improve the blood supply chain to ensure safe and adequate blood supplies (Yaakob et al., 2022).
Solution Chosen and How to Implement It with the Stakeholders
The chosen solution is public sensitization; education on the importance of blood donation is relevant. This will be availed using community service centres, focus groups, and seminars. All stakeholders are critical to the implementation of this strategy. CBCC management and allied government agencies will facilitate the development of learning resources. Collaborating with hospitals and healthcare providers will promote public education by regularly interacting with community members.
Conclusion and Reflection of This Process
Blood transfusion is a life-saving practice that requires coordination among various stakeholders. The problem faced by the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) is the inability to fulfil its projected blood needs. Consequently, healthcare costs and morbidity and mortality rates have increased. This problem can be addressed by decentralizing blood donations, public education, and strategic management. All stakeholders play a crucial role in public sensitization. Notably, education on the importance of blood donation is relevant.
