My Opinion

The College for All debate is based on the assumptions that college graduates are left with the burden of paying debts, a college degree is not sufficient to start a successful career, the need for various options that high school graduates can consider, the economic impact of college education, and the emphasis of college education on job training (Barth, 2018). In my opinion, the structure of college education enables learners to acquire specific knowledge, skills, and competencies that can only be acquired by studying their area of specialization. For example, a college education in nursing emphasizes equipping the learner with the knowledge and skills needed in the nursing profession. Therefore, it becomes much easier for college-educated individuals to survive in the job market.

My Stand on the Topic

I believe a college education should teach students diverse skills rather than job training. The high competition for jobs in the job market requires applicants to have unique skills to stand out among a pool of candidates. Therefore, college education should include volunteering programs and internships to expose students to the job market and give them the experience that employers can consider in the hiring process. Internships are also a great way of helping students get their first job and start their career journey, thus eliminating the issue of unemployment among college graduates.

Why I Feel as I Do

I feel that college education emphasis on job training in colleges is a leading cause of unemployment among college graduates because modules are structured based on a specific course to prepare students for the tasks within their profession. Therefore, college only assumes the role of equipping knowledge and skills to students and does not assist them in job placement and identifying job opportunities related to their careers.
